The 2025 Met Gala will be an extravagant event — as it always is. Stars will come dressed to the nines (and 10s) on fashion’s biggest night.
The theme for this year is “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” which celebrates the concept of Black dandyism.
In a press release, the Met said the theme was inspired by Barnard College chair and professor Monica L. Miller’s 2009 book called “Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity.”
The museum also said the dress code, “Tailored For You,” is “a nod to the exhibition’s focus on suiting and menswear.”
According to Vogue, this will be the first time since 2003 that the gala will feature predominantly menswear at the gala.
When is the 2025 Met Gala?
The 2025 Met Gala will take place at The Metropolitan Museum of Art on Monday, May 5.
How is the date chosen?
The Met Gala is typically held on the first Monday in May in New York — but the tradition is relatively new, compared to the event’s history.
The Costume Institute’s first fundraiser was held in 1948 in the fall. Until 2001, the Met Gala was held in November or December.
From 2002 to 2004, the party was in April. Then came 2005. The “Celebrating Chanel”-themed event was first time the Met Gala was held the first Monday of May.
Since then, it’s been a tradition, enough so that a documentary about the Met Gala was entitled “The First Monday in May.” This means next year’s Met Gala will be on May 4, May 3 in 2027 and May 1 in 2028.
Though the Met Gala is not always in May. In 2021, the celebration was moved to September due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
