Schools rethink class rank, weighted GPAs amid concerns

Some schools are reevaluating class rank and weighted GPA systems amid concerns that they emphasize grades over skill mastery and can affect student engagement. Watertown schools Superintendent Alison Villanueva led such a change after a publicized error in class rank, while Winchester schools Superintendent Jason Van Heukelum’s district has switched to a Latin honors system, and California Area School District in Pennsylvania is moving toward the same approach.
